The first trimester spans from week 1 to week 12 of pregnancy and is one of the most transformative periods of your life. Your body is working overtime to grow a whole new human being, and it's completely normal to feel a mix of excitement, anxiety and exhaustion.
During these early weeks, your baby develops from a tiny cluster of cells into a fully-formed miniature human complete with a beating heart, developing brain, and even tiny fingers and toes.
Morning sickness - despite the name - can strike at any time of day. It's caused by the surge in pregnancy hormones, particularly HCG. While unpleasant, it's usually a good sign that your pregnancy is progressing well. Eating small, frequent meals and avoiding strong smells can help.
Your booking appointment with your midwife usually happens around 8–10 weeks. This is when your pregnancy will be officially confirmed, your due date estimated, and blood tests arranged. Your 12-week dating scan will give you a more accurate due date.
Nutrition is crucial in the first trimester. Folic acid (400mcg daily) is the most important supplement - it significantly reduces the risk of neural tube defects. Vitamin D is also recommended for all pregnant women in the UK.
